Auctioneer Tips

Many first time auction-goers mistakenly think that an auctioneer will indiscriminately accept bids from the room based on the merest twitch or cough. Not so. Auctioneers are well practised in spotting intent. Certainly be attentive, but don't worry about phatom bids - auctioneers are highly skilled professionals. When you want to bid, make sure you clearly indicate the bid in the usual way for the venue. If you're not sure what this is. Ask.

Auctioneer Observations

Auctioneers recommend that you place yourself well, with a good view of the room. You will be able to spot the number and seriousness of other bidders. Don't try psyching them out, you're likely to just end up causing a bidding war... do also make sure you are clearly visible to the auctioneer.

When the auction begins, make sure you can hear properly and have all the information you require. IF not, ask a member of staff.
